With the help of our colleagues in München, we finnished the second stage of our butterfly experiments. This time, we had 3 synchronized high speed cameras recording at 5000 fps from 3 different perspectives.
We have finished the get-to-know-each-other experiments with the butterfly pieris brassicae, also known as the large white or white cabbage butterfly. It is one of the most common butterflies in Europe and can be seen even here in Berlin very frequently. The animals were provided by Insect Services, which is a Spin-off of the Freie Universität Berlin.

This video shows a volume rendering of a the vorticity magnitude generated by a bumblebee. The model bumblebee (see Publications for details, the results are published in PRL) in flying forward at 2.5 m/s and its Reynolds number is 2042.
